3/4 sized violin labelled “Antonius Stradivarius made by E R Schmidt & Co. violin makers Saxon. Only genuine when bearing our written signature. Signed E R Schmidt.”
The body measures 13 ¼ inches. It has a fine, evenly grained belly, 2-piece flame back and The C bouts are 4 1/2 inches.
This instrument had some major surgery about ten years ago by Mark Surridge in Colchester. While the instrument itself is well-made, the length of the original neck (5”) was not compatible with the 3/4 body and has therefore been replaced. A new bridge was also fitted. For historical reasons, the original neck is included in the sale. The violin is now immediately playable in all positions. The strings are Pirastro Tonica, with the A missing.
There is a crack near the neck on the upper bout but it appears to be a varnish crack and has held since the new neck was fitted. Some woodworm around one of the C bouts and corner was also treated at the same time as the neck was replaced. Used by a few of my pupils, I don't think this violin has been played very much and it needs playing on.
A bow and a lightweight shaped case in fair condition is included.
When posted, the bridge will be collapsed for safety, which means that before use, the soundpost may need to be re-set.
